A sinful start to the last Hastings race.......

I went sailing on my baby Tri (SIN) yesterday with a young guy from Woodend and another friend of a fellow Macedon CFA member. Neither of these two had even seen a sail boat before I think. It was hilarious. One stuff up after another. We approached the starting area early so I could take the two of them through tacking. Did one, two, three tacks staying out of everyone's way. They kept forgetting to do things or timing it wrong, but no matter we all expected not to be a well oiled machine anyway. The wind was dieing so I put the big main and the number 1 heady up (130 %). Tacks were bad, letting go on the heady before it had pushed us around etc. I noticed that the fleet were moving to a new start line a bit further over towards the centre of Westernport. So we continued to tack backwards and forwards to try and improve. The leading boats got to a buoy halfway out and were milling around near the buoy. No problem, keep that practice happening. Slowly getting better. Hey! What the bloody hell! George on his quick Trimaran is flying off down the track. Bloody hell they all are. SHIT! The race has started ten minutes ago. That change of start line wasn't a change of start line at all. #@#$#@!@$#$$#@@! Quick guys we have to tack and go back to the start line The race has stared and we are 500 metres away from the start line with a dieing wind. #@#$%^$@#@%^&*(#@ Round we go back the start Buoy. Only a measly 10min after everyone else. Not even sure if we made the start cut off (hope so). Q!@#%##@@% Round that start now turn back to the turning buoy Some are off and running but most are now at or around the turning buoy in NO wind with them all bobbing up and down. At least I have something. Not much 2 maybe 3 knot but this old girl is GREAT in light wind. OK boys Keep down low. Don't move! Shake NOTHING. OK if I use what little I have got to reach over (the fastest way to move in the water for me) then I MAY be able to catch some of these guys. (but maybe not). The guys that are rounding the mark are off, LONG gone, BUGGER!!!!! God I'm a dickhead! Should have been looking My fault, sorry troupes we'll try and get em back. Work together! We can do it! Shit! Get up to directly in line with the mark, Did really well, much better than them. OK still 4 or is it 5 boats still floating at the turning mark. Lets go get em fellas. OK Goose wing. 200 metre to the mark. Carefull Carefull. Gently does it. Slowly slowy catching em!. Shit, one goes round, bugger another. Look at em go! Got to get round there. Still 3 boats bobbing there. Oh we past one already forgot to tell you. Poor old bugger, a big friendly cruiser, 3 Knots of wind is not too friendly to the old girl. If I can't pass her going to give up sailing. Next boat goes around the turning mark, then the next. Both move away well, dam them. We get to the mark just as the last but one rounds. Round we go! Well done boys good tack. Take a bit of time to get them to trim for speed but at least we are on our way. Most of the fleet is now MILES in front. Can't see George, or for that matter any of the other multi's. Boy are they going to rag me. What an idiot! Where will it all end. Death! Destruction! Mayhem! (some of the more colourful words were watered down!... editor...thanks Mark...it can only get better!)

Xmas Social Cruise

Hi, the social cruise scheduled for this Saturday is now going to be held a day later on the Sunday. Our apologies for the late notice, but most of the participating boats couldn't make the Saturday. A call to Mustang Sally, Quickskips, Redshift or Sin for departure details from Hastings Marina.

Hastings Summer Series Race 1 report

Mustang Sally with Libby from ' Skips ' on board, flew past the Mono's for a distant and resounding win ...congratulations to Al for taking an early lead in the series. We now know why Quickskips goes so well as it is clear who the Hugh Trehane is on board her..... that magic was vested upon Mustang on Saturday and together they showed a clean pair of Sails to the rest of the fleet...except Shuttle who was only 20 seconds behind on corrected time. Talking of which, Shuttle had an attractive additional crew member on board who added French depth and experience to this modest crew and despite massive & traumatic gear failure pressed on to just trail Frassld over the line by a couple of hundred metres. Frasslo showed good speed during the race & will be a force to be rekoned with as the season goes on... well done Shaun and crew. Mark the Carbon Fibre Man on SIN benefited enormously from Shuttles selfless advice about where to go (!) but then fell foul of his new industrial strength rudder and seemed to get lost in the mist a bit. Great to have you back on the water Mark. Sined Annonnymouse Rowing Reporter

General Meeting Feedback...Catchy- reporter at large!

Ripper meeting on Tuesday night that had everything Comedy, Safety, Qld Race Roundup, Pathos, & couple of nice drinks (apparently the Red was from Skips) Georges unintended swim, whilst amusing, bought a very important issue back to the table : safety , - a good wake up call... we did note that Tim was perturbed about the dud result for that race. ..great strategy George. Long discussion on the OMR rating changes being forced thro' by Queenslanders without consulting rest of country... poor form. The film "Deep Water" was a touching reminder of how ill directed ambition can enable contractual obligations to ruin a race & a life New boat on the blocks - SIN II - hand made by Mark in Carbon Fibre & Unobtanium .... can't wait to see it... the things one will do to attract a crew! Finally, some informal discussion on SOMR sponsors... we felt adding a 9th heat around the carpark over an olympic course with 4 crew in a Kanga bag might entice Tim to open the purse strings... afterwards they could double up as sea Anchors...

No Multihulls in the 2012 Olmpic Games?

I came across this article in LSD. It would appear that the RYA has decided not to support a catamaran class at the 2012 games. The RYA is consitutionally bound to consult its members, but has failed to do so and is arrogantly unashamed of this when asked. A petition has been organised and has 550 names on it in 2 days. The following thread connects to the RYA submissions and readers can then chose to sign the petition if they so wish. http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/CatamaranSubmission/index.html This DailySail Article sums it up quite well: Although some of you out there may not be huge fans of catamarans, this does not warrant them from being eliminated from the Olympic Games. They provide some awesome action and are fantastic to watch, and ensure that we have some variety within the sailing discipline. Is this first step by the RYA just a nudge to other associations that the Tornado should be shunned from the Olympics? Does this also provide evidence that sailing as a whole might be scrapped from the Olympics putting truth behind those rumours? Along the grapevine it was heard that Australia will not send a team to the 2012 Olympic Games in London if medals are not won in 2008 at Beijing. Support the UK guys and sign the online petition, otherwise a room full of executives will kill the dreams of so many Tornado sailors across the UK.

Skips in 3rd place and Redshift Drama

Hi Dave.... Libby here...We are having a great regatta so far..... Mon passage race and we were FIRST over the line and had about 12 mins on the next boat over the line... thought we had it in the bag, and BUGGER me we came 3rd on OMR....then around the cans for the next day.... 2 races... race one... 5th over the line... 7th on OMR... second race.. second over the line and 2nd on OMR... so 3rd place overall....Wednesday was a lay day.... nothing broken so nothing to fix! (Played lazybastards sitting on someone else's cat doing the WAGS {Wednesday AfternoonGentlemans Racing} flying around the course, top speed 20.2 knots! Thursday (Today).... we were having a SCREAMING race... ( well until we were at Peel island when we lost the 10ish knots we had on the way and came to a screaming halt... and watched the rest of the fleet catch us)...But then we were not forced to drop anchor to stop going backwards, as at least three other boats were.... We had a HUGE 20-25kn on the return leg... BIG kite up ( the boys were LOVING IT!!) Tim was almost steering one finger.... Skippy was so well balanced.... All going well until we were about a mile from the finish line... and we hear a call the race is abandoned and a man lost overboard... down comes the kite.... deciding we were not much help in finding anyone as we were so far ahead we could not see anyone except for Akimbo even close!!!! ... then we hear it isREDSHIFT who has lost a MAN OVERBOARD... about 20 VERY tense minutes andwe hear the man is picked up by a passing yacht and all is well after about 30 mins in the water... It was GEORGE, who was steering through a jibe with the crew up forward all doing jobs... the rudder had given way and George went over the back with the crew unaware until things had settled, and then they had no rudder to steer back on their course, and called Pan pan... George and crew all well...Gotta go now as we are off to the pub....Skippies in 3rd after Coco Loco and Intrigue..... Ciao Libby X

Hastings Race 5 update

A large fleet of Mono’s and 4 Multi’s mustered off MS2. Quickskips, the Multi series leaders, appeared jittery, probably because Shuttle was back! It is not inconceivable that Shuttles intimidatory tactics have spurred the Quicklips crew to the next level, very timely too with the Nationals looming.

The course set was 3 sausages … a beat up to 35 and then a broad reach down to 27. Mustang Sally appeared to engage in some friendly barging at the start but eventually all cleanly away. The  Scarlett Pepperell romped away initially, but the whole fleet pondered his classic donut at the top mark, & general consensus was that it was a bit of showboating! (Our thoughts are with you Clarky. Why not try Lib as skip ?) The more conservative crews were content to indulge in the finer more elegant moves like a flawlessly timed, brilliantly executed Lee Bow tack on Fleetwing leading to the top mark, - Its amazing how well the modest crew of Shuttle manage to extract the turn of speed that they do from that touring Tri. The downwind leg on the first 2 sausages were perfect for high speed  fun… the wind had backed a little for the final sausage making it a little shy to fly the kite. The end result was a win for Shuttle, Mustang Sally the runners up and Quickskips down the back somewhere. Our thanks to the Hastings start boat for a well run race. What a good day for sailing though, finally, consistent and healthy breezes, - invigorating.

Hastings Winter Series

The Hastings Yacht Club winter series is well on the way with Race 5 completed last Saturday 28th July. The Quickskips crew are excited with the series lead, and are if full training race mode for the up and coming nationals in Queensland. The Quickskips crew are wondering why when we do well Fulla Pepperell takes the glory, when he mucks up and nearly hit the top mark it's Clarkia's fault. We tried to tell him that their is no I in team but he responded there is in Tim.

Committee meeting feedback

Prior to the June general meeting, your committee met as usual. There were 2 main outcomes:
  1. A date of 7th August was set for the AGM at Blackrock Yacht Club. A formal notice will be posted in the Age and an Agenda and voting paper will be sent to all members. It will be followed by a guest speaker as usual. Please put this date in your diary and if you have ideas on the direction of our club, give consideration to possibly joining the committee...
  2. We have tentatively set the dates for SOMR 2008. We are proposing we follow the same format as this year which is the week immediately prior to Geelong week. A letter will be sent to all last years participants seeking ideas on how we can improve the regatta for this year. The provisional timetable would be
  • Sat 19 January... Race 1 in afternoon
  • Sun 20 January... Races 2 and 3
  • Mon 21 January.. Races 4 and 5
  • Tue 22 January... lay day for resails if needed

June General Meeting

Rob Remilton has kindly offered to step in and talk about his recent Three Peaks Race. As well as describing the race, he will outline what it took behind the scenes to prepare for it. The 2008 race will be the 20th and there is an expectation that the Multihull contingent will be large.....

June General Meeting

The meeting is scheduled for 8pm at Blackrock Yacht Club on the 5th June. We have frantically been trying to secure a new speaker as Paul Larson has had to withdraw for the time being. The meeting is still on and no doubt we will have something lined up in time. See you there...

Field (Sea) report from a roving reporter.....

I received this report on the last 2 races of the Yaringa series today...... Yaringa Sandy Point Race - Sat 14 April A fascinating tactical battle was observed during the Yaringa Sandy Point Race, - consensus was that Quicklips (QL) appeared intimidated by Shuttle and was seen to be covering Shuttle’s every move on the return leg. Of particular interest was their thinly veiled plan to lure the deeper drafted touring boat into the shallows near Hanns Inlet. This ruse whilst devilishly cunning in the light airs did not tempt Shuttle, as they stayed alert in deeper water and did not follow QL into their own trap. Once QL refloated, the remaining return leg was curiously reminiscent of the tacking duels off Freo in the 1983 Americas Cup. Yaringa Mystery Race – Sat 28th April More recently the QL Crew was referred to as “Soft Chooks” apparently in reference to their non start in the beautiful and dry Yaringa Mystery Race last Saturday. The disappointingly small Multihulls entry list was heavily felt by the faithful all weather Shuttle crew (not soft Chooks), but resulted in a very exciting finish with a tacking duel of epic proportions with the exquisitely sailed ‘The Colonel’ to the finish line. QL presence was sorely missed (as were all the other Multi’s). – Come on Boys ! This Roving reporter looks forward to full fields of Multi’s for the upcoming HYC Winter Series beginning Sat June 2 so they may experience the craft & guile of Quickskips as they seek joyous sailing and success (& redress).

V12 hits the shores on 24 May

Members Daniel and Elaine Massey take delivery of their new Mahe 36 "Together" in Sydney on the 24th May. It will be the first in Australia and will be sporting the MYCV number V12 on its sails. Its been a long wait ..... enjoy her

Club Members dominate Multi Regattas

MYCV members have dominated recent multihull racing around the country taking out wins in Victoria, South Australia and Queensland in recent months.
APC Max seen from Raw Nerve in the Gladstone Race
The Marley Point race was won by Tony Considine on APC Max followed by George Bulka on Redshift. Line Honours in the Adelaide to Port Lincoln Race was taken out by Martyn Riley in Raw to the Core (Bloomfield 30) crossing the line ahead of the 98' Maxi Skandia in conditions that were not ideal for multihulls, and was unbeaten over the line in the following Port Lincoln Regatta where Dale Gardner Berry came second on handicap. Most recently we Victorians took out the first two positions over the line in the hazardous Brisbane to Gladstone Race that saw two catamarans capsize (Rongntudjuuu and The Dancing Emu); Martyn Riley taking line honours on Raw Nerve (well ahead of the leanding monohull - Ichi Ban) followed by Tony Considine's APC Max.

April General Meeting Feedback

Highlight of the meeting was a talk by Chris Mitchell describing the journey to get his Access dinghies accepted by the yachting fraternity and general public alike. The video footage of some disabled sailors excelling in their new found sport on an equal footing against the able bodied was both inspirational and uplifting. With the AGM occuring in August, we will have time for 1 further general meeting in early June. We are trying to get Paul Larson as our main guest speaker. Paul recently totalled his "Sail Rocket" whilst practising for the world sail speed record. He was doing 33 knots in 16.5 knots of wind ( a bit faster then Quickskips), dumped his main a little too quickly and the resulting compressive loads caused huge amounts of damage... Will all rusty cruising sailors please put 5th May in your diaries. We plan to have a "May Multi Muster" at Cape Woolamai. Unless you can fit under the bridge at San Remo, we plan to poke our heads out into the Bass straight, turn left and amble down to Woolamai on Saturday morning. After an overnight Muster, we will poke our heads back out again and return home. Planning is in its infancy at the moment, and we are looking to Alex for leadership, but if you like the idea a quick email to me at tappers@bigpond.com indicating possible attendance would be good. Only 2 races left on the Summer series calendar... hope to see as many as possible on Saturday..

Late Breaking News!!

In an unprecedented event, the Quickskips team were seen practising today at a secret location in preparation for the 2008 WAFIR rematch. Noticeably absent from the practise were Chis and Libby...Sources advise that she is pictured here doing 16 knots in 14 knots of wind... faster then your average F82R?

April General Meeting .... 8pm 3rd April BRYC

Apologies for late notice, but the next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday 3rd April at Black Rock Yacht Club. Our guest Speaker will be Chris Mitchell. Chris is the brainchild behind the Access Dinghy in particular and "universal design" in general. His talk has the title of "Get your Bum wet again" and is assisted by Video footage..I dont think it has an 18+ rating! There will also be the usual Commodores corner with feedback from Stuart on SOMR and Geelong.... we might ask Quickskips to explain their WAFIR win? Look forward to seeing you all there...

When will they learn.....

This is an extract from an article published a week or so ago on the recent Adelaide Port Lincoln Race... "At the briefing in Adelaide on Thursday night Steve Kemp announced the number for Skandia to call to announce her expected early arrival in Port Lincoln but skipper of one of the multihulls, Martin Riley asked if he could use the same number should he arrive before Skandia. This request was accompanied by howls of derision but sure enough Raw To The Core arrived in Port Lincoln 22 minutes ahead of Skandia." Well done Martin and crew...

Apology

In my account of the latest WAFIR race, I suggested that Chris Culph was observed helming Quickskips. It appears my implication that the win was due to his presence on the boat was completely unfounded. I am now reliably informed that Chris spent most of the race lounging on the nets, with Tim, nursing sore heads.... So who was helming the boat that so resoundingly thrashed Redshift? All suggestions will be treated in the strictest confidence until published on this site... Libby?

David and Goliath?

Is Terry our rising star? ...... I can confirm that he did pass Skandia under full throttle with a Bundy skillfully held in his hand and all before breakfast!

WAFIR results... Good win for QuickSkips

This years Warneet Around French Island Race had 7 multi's competing. The start was delayed and moved to Joes Island because of the light winds. At the Gun, Shuttle, Redshift, Quickskips and Mustang Sally were quickish out of the blocks. Cascade was observed making last minute adjustments to something resulting in a leisurly start some minutes later....We were all flying spinakers and trying to get the best from the light winds across the top of the island. Redshift and Quickskips slowly pulled out a lead with George playing the angles and Skips looking for boat speed. Shuttle held onto Sally for a while but Al put his A into G and started catching the lead boats....well he pulled away from Shuttle at least! As usual, the wind picked up as we skirted down the East of the Island with the tide helping progress significantly. It was basically a port beat down the east and then a starboard beat along the south of the island with winds up to 12 knots. Cascade was starting to catch Shuttle and Trifle was quietly getting on with the job in her usual efficient fashion. The 3 lead boats were romping off into the distance at this stage, the west leg being almost a dead run to the finish off Crawfish rock. By the time we had all crossed the finish line the wind had picked up a little which helped the beat back to Hastings. When the results were computed, Quickskips was the winner beating Redshift by about 40 seconds on corrected time. Trifle pipped Shuttle at the post for 3rd place by 2 seconds! Sally was 5th and Cascade 6th. Well done Quickskips.... was that Chris helming?

SOMR Rouges Gallery

Got tired of seeing Shuttle and waiting for the SOMR report .... thought a picture of the SOMR winners would be appropriate... well done George and team..... the new sail worked a treat ....

Where there's a will there's a way...

Took Shuttle out at Yaringa for a clean up and weighing just prior to SOMR. Plans have Shuttle at 8 meters wide and Slip way at 8.2 meters wide..... no worries mate! On the day, things didn't go according to plan.... Shuttle has 8.3 meter beam and Slip way is just under 8 meters wide!! Who says you cant fit a quart into a pint pot... we made it by tilting her a bit to slip one of the amas over the floating walk way.

Next month they plan to remove the fixed walkway on the right ............

Cheers

David

Warneet Motor Yacht Club Around French Island race

Now that SOMR and Geelong week have come and gone, the next "big event" locally is the Warneet Around French Island Race. It is scheduled to start at 7.30am for Multihulls on the 24th Feb. I entered for the 1st time last year and found it to be a good fun race to participate in. We experienced most weather and wind conditions during our circumnavigation of the island so never a dull moment.  The club is informal and friendly and a good Multihull fleet would add to the ambiance!!

NOR, Entry form and sailing instructions are already published on their Web site at

Look forward to seeing you all there again

SOMR race entries

Just logged onto the Skandia Geelong week web site and pleased to see that there are currently 12 Multihulls entered. We are expecting that the same 12 (and more) will be participating in SOMR first, but as yet few entries have filtered through. I am guessing that if we had an online entry facility things would be a little different.... we need Stuart to close down his business for a week to give him the time to develop the facilty..... in the meantime, we have to live with snail mail so don't delay and get your entries in prior to 12th January.

Christmas Break Racing

Apologies for the late notice, but Ken Walters of Cerberus Sailing Club has kindly offered to run a weekend and mid week twilight series during the Christmas break and before the Hastings and Yaringa series start again. Details are best found on Bill Fairley's web site at the following address: http://www.members.optusnet.com.au/wfairley/ If you are thinking of participating, give Ken a call or drop him an email.... support has not been strong thus far but hopefully more will join in as we move into the new year.
