SOMR 2007 Proposal

This year we are proposing Southern Ocean Multihull Regatta (SOMR) is held just prior to the Geelong Week Regatta, to encourage multihull sailors to compete in both regattas. We feel that this will make it easier for sailors to race in both regattas, because it will be possible to sail in both while only taking one week of holidays from work.

The current plan for the SOMR Regatta is to hold it in Westernport Bay from Saturday January 20 through to Tuesday January 23, with presentation on the Tuesday night. The Wednesday will free to allow skippers to deliver their boats to Port Phillip Bay for a passage race on the Thursday that will start from a location towards the southern end of the bay, finishing near Port Melbourne. The Williamstown to Geelong Race will be held on the Friday (Australia Day), followed by the Geelong Regatta Races, which will be held over the weekend.

If any members or other interested parties have any comments on this topic, please post them to the MYCV Commodore commodore@mycv.asn.au.

Wangi Multihull Regatta on again

Every two years the Wangi Sailing club hosts a regatta for large multihulls. Up until 2004 this regatta has been the Trailable Multi hull National Titles. Non trailable multihulls have always been welcome but their results have been calculated separately. This year we are making this a fully open regatta to all types of large multihulls. There will be three divisions to cater for all levels of performance and results will be calculated on PHS and OMR. We strongly encourage all multihulls of all different sizes to come to Wangi over the 3rd week in November to take part in what has been and always will be on of the friendliest best value for money regattas in Australia. For those who have been before, don’t worry we aren’t changing a thing and for those who haven’t been yet, come along and see what you’ve been missing. The dates for this year’s regatta are November 19 to 24 so mark these down in your calendar and make sure the annual leave is booked in nice and early.

For those who haven’t been to Wangi yet we are located on the Western Shore of Lake Macquarie just North of Sydney. For the dates of the regatta we have virtually exclusive use of the largest expanse of water on Lake Macquarie ensuring the best possible sailing and fairest competition. The time of year the regatta is also the best time of year for moderate to fresh sea breezes, though nothing is guaranteed where Huey is involved. The Wangi sailing club is in the grounds of the local RSL so you can enjoy the cheapest drinks in the area with an unrivalled view of the start/finish area. Wangi Point has a 30m foreshore reserve around its entire length which is not only great for bush walking but offers many elevated vantage points for spectators. Wangi is also just half an hours drive from the Hunter Valley vineyards and beautiful beaches. So not only can you come and sail on one of the best smooth water venues in Australia but enjoy a great holiday in the area.

Welcome to the new MYCV website

Well we've finally got around to updating the website and we intend to keep posting news and general club information to the website to try to keep everyone informed on club events. Anyone with newsworthy articles is strongly encouraged to send them to the webmaster.

The new format allows for members (and non-members) to subscribe to the news feed using an aggregator, if that all sounds too complicated then you also have the option of subscribing to the mailing list which will automatically send the latest news to your chosen email address; or you can just check on the website from time to time to keep up to date.

There is no need to worry if you think there is something on the old website that you cannot live without, because it has been archived and is available through a link on the new home page. If you have any suggestions for improvement or things you would like to see on the website please email the webmaster webmaster@mycv.asn.au.
